First Midvaal Marathon attracts more than a thousand athletes

MEYERTON. - Fitness was in the air when more than a thousand people took part in the first Midvaal May Marathon in Meyerton on Sunday, 29 May.

The marathon was presented by the Meyerton Athletics Club in collaboration with the Midvaal Local Municipality.
According to the official results, 805 athletes took part in the marathon (42.2km), while 370 people took part in the half marathon (21.1km). A total of 207 people participated in the 10km race.

It is unknown exactly how many athletes participated in the 6km race, but one of the athletes who lined up was the Executive Mayor of the Midvaal Local Municipality, Alderman Peter Teixeira and some of the councilors of the Midvaal Local Municipality.

Afterwards, Teixeira congratulated all the participants who finished the events, as well as the winners.
Teixeira says the marathon attracted local as well as overseas athletes.
“We will continue to grow this race and ensure that it does become an annual event. We are hoping to grow even further in the coming years.
“For the next one we will look at going over the 2 000 cap. This year we were restricted to 2 000 participants, as a result of Covid-19 regulations.
“We are looking at having over 5 000 athletes participating Midvaal May Marathon going forward.”
According to Teixeira the marathon serves as a way to encourage outdoor activities and getting residents involved in a healthy lifestyle, while at the same time hosting a qualifying event for the prestigious Comrades Marathon.
“At the same time, we also want to attract more people to come and have a look at our beautiful town, Midvaal, and hopefully to get them to purchase property here, because we are the best performing municipality in Gauteng, and also one of the top 5 best performing municipalities in the country,” Teixeira concluded.
Robert Mathonsi of the Khomanani Athletics Club won the marathon in a time of 02:42:37. Matome Charles Moloto of the AEL Athletics Club was second in a time of 02:43:27. Meyerton Athletics Club’s own William Mokwalakwala took third place in a time of 02:46:09. Natasha Malan from Impala Marathon Club won the women’s marathon in a time of 03:30:12. Gaylin Matthews of Sunninghill Striders was second in a time of 03:30:26. Sonja van der Merwe of Kempton Road Runners was third in a time of 03:32:34.
