Three suspects appear in court for alleged electricity sabotage

Police said the other two suspects are still at large.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Three suspects, two females and one male briefly appeared at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s court facing charges of sabotage on Friday.

The matter has been postponed for the Investigation Officer (IO) to verify the suspects’ physical addresses. The trio age 33, 34 and 51 have been remanded in custody until 28 April. The arrest comes after the recent power failure throughout the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) which is suspected as a sabotage. Police said the other two suspects are still at large.

Rumour has it that the suspects, one a security guard at the town electricity substation allowed her accomplises access to the premises as they pretended to be employees of the ELM. She told the police that she later heard the a sound of explosions in the station and that she was astonished as she realised that the power station has been bombed. A well placedreliable source said the explosion at the power station happened over a tender at the power station.

It has been alleged that apparently the ELM wanted to issue a tender for some developments in some of the power stations and that some people were not happy that they were not chosen to be a part of this. Since the explosion there has been a black out in most residential areas of the ELM.

The municipality has promised that electricity will return soon.
