MEC unpacks newly passed Economic Development Bill

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko has in the past weeks engaged communities in the Vaal Triangle on the passing of the Township Economic Bill.

RUS-TER-VAAL.– Mazibuko recently engaged with communities in Evaton, Sebokeng, Sharpeville and Rus-ter-vaal on various ways they can help grow the township economy.

This has been done through a community outreach programme dubbed Ntirhisano. The Bill was passed on March 24 by the Gauteng Legislature and has been welcomed by the Gauteng Department of Economic Development (GDED).

The bill will present an opportunity for entrepreneurs and prospective entrepreneurs to become active in re-building the township economy and become producers instead of consumers. Speaking in Sharpeville, Mazibuko urged members of the community to start looking at producing various products that are being sold at retail outlets.

“The bill legislation compels us as government to use a certain percentage to procure goods or services from our communities,” said Mazibuko.

The bill will become an act once signed by Gauteng Premier David Makhura. The act will increase existing businesses in townships and enable the creation of employment.
