Human Rights Day Commemorated

"The brutal killing of the innocent and the people marchers in Sharpeville on 21 March 1960 should never be forgotten.”

SHARPEVILLE.- ‘Protecting and preserving our human rights gains’ was the national theme for 2022 Human Rights Day commemorations in honor of those who lost their lives 62 years ago.

The commemorations saw political parties arrive in numbers at the Phelindaba Cemetery to lay wreaths to remember those who lost their lives during the Sharpeville shooting on 21 March 1960. The Executive Mayor of Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM), Sipho Radebe was joined by the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District, Lerato Maloka.

Radebe said that looking back at our democracy the gains must be cherished and protected. Radebe added that Human Rights Day was born from the Sharpeville massacre whereby many paid the ultimate price for Freedom.

“Vaal is a symbol of unfortunate history cherished by the brutality perpetrated by minority white regimes against the black majority.Emfuleni as a cradle of Humankind, is influenced by the struggle waged by the brave women and men in protest against the injustice colonial apartheid system which deprived people of basic human rights. The brutal killing of the innocent and the people marchers in Sharpeville on 21 March 1960 should never be forgotten.”
