Bangladeshi kidnappers appear in court for murder

VANDERBIJLPARK.- A murder case against four Bangladeshi nationals has been postponed for further investigations.

The four briefly appeared at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s court on Monday facing charges of murder. The case was postponed until 11 March to arrange for a Bangladeshi interpreter. The suspects were recently let out on R 3000 bail on the case of kidnap that happened in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga Province.

They were later arrested and charged for the murder of Rezaul Alam in Bophelong. This after they allegedly assaulted and killed him on 26 December 2021. Speaking about the horrific incident, Mabhubur Rahaman (32), Chairperson of the Bangladeshi Community in Vanderbijlpark, said that the suspects were known to the deceased. After kidnapping him, they allegedly stripped him naked and assaulted him while others were taking video footages. They later sent the video back home in Bangladesh, to his parents, demanding a ransom of R2 million. Rahman said the assault started at an unknown place in Mpumalanga. Rahaman said the parents managed to afford R 200 000 that they sent to the suspects. Apparently the cash was not enough and they continued with the ordeal to beat the deceased until he ultimately died. Rahaman said that the four later wrapped the body, set it alight, before they left it in the bush. They were caught by the community members who handed them to the police. This after the footage made rounds on social media.
