Mamello’s killer to be sentenced

38-year-old murder accused Madingane Mokako will hear her fate on 16 February, as she is said to be sentetenced at the Vereeniging Magistrate Court.

VEREENIGING. –  Mokako is charged with the attemped murder of her lover and the murder of 21-year-old Mamello Raboroko who was seeing the man at the time.

Mokako is alleged to have arrived at her lover’s residence in 2020 where she found the two together. It is said that she proceeded to stab the two, fatally wounding Raboroko. The lover was hospitalized and later released from the hospital.

Police Spokesperson Constable Busisiwe Sango reported that Mokako had been arrested and charged.

The suspect was however released on bail. It is believed that it was due to her pregnancy at the time.

Presenting mitigating factors for the accused, her lawyer stated that she was a first time offender, an unemployed mother of two and that she was remorseful about the incident, pleading that the accused be given a suspended sentence.

However, gender-based violence (GBV) activist Cylia Zengele from Kwanele Holekane ka GBVF said they were calling for the maximum sentence in the matter.

“GBV is a pandemic in the Vaal Triangle. Woman to Woman violence must not become another pandemic that we have to deal with because it is slowly becoming a trend for women to kill one another over men.”

Zengele said that women should have enough self worth to walk away from such situations. The law must set an example that this kind of brutal act against another woman is unlawful and punishable by law.

The mother of the deceased, Tshidi Raboroko, said she was grateful that the matter was coming to an end and that Justice was finally going to be served.
