Itireleng Task Team kicks off community clean-up campaign

SHARPEVILLE.- Itireleng Task Team members were seen volunteering in a clean-up campaign at a local school and creche in Sharpeville recently.

The ongoing heavy rains have left grass growing long and unmanageable around Itsose Primary School and Grace Creche, which the members spent the day cutting away.

The task team that was established to clean Boipatong township has now expanded to clean in other areas.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Itireleng Task Team Chairman Parks Mofokeng said the team is no longer solely focusing on the Boipatong area, as they have recently been getting invites in other areas to clean.

“At the beginning our focus was to clean Boipatong township only, but things have changed because now we get invitations from other townships, especially schools. We also help to clean the yard of elderly people in our community.

There are elderly people who stay alone, and we pride ourselves to help them because we want to see our community living in a clean environment. If you look at Boipatong today, it has changed because we got rid of the dumping sites in our community, especially the open spaces. In the past our community would dump rubbish next to the school yards, but we have since discouraged them, especially next to school premises,” said Mofokeng.

Itireleng Task Team turned the dumping site into a community park next to Lebohang Secondary School in Boipatong. The Boipatong community, especially those who stay near the school, no longer dump their rubbish next to the school yard thanks to the Itireleng Task Team.

This unique initiative started with a small group of men who volunteer to clean the Boipatong and today they are in demand with everyone asking for their service. Mofokeng thanked Cape Gate for making this project a success by donating resources in the form of tools and for supporting the Itireleng Task Team in making a difference in the Boipatong community.
