“You put yourselves in that situation”: ELM officials

They were simply told that nothing could be done for them as they had ‘put themselves in the situation' by voting for the opposition.

VEREENIGING.- With the Democratic Alliance (DA) having won some of the wards in Vereeniging, problems seem to be mounting for ordinary members of the community when it comes to service delivery.

As the festive season rains wreaked havoc most of the roads in the town were simply impossible to travel on due to pothole and blocked main and side holes. The members of the community said to Sedibeng Ster that when they requested assistance from the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) officials with this problem, they were simply told that nothing could be done for them as they had ‘put themselves in the situation’ by voting for the DA. The community members said that they were met with such arrogance when phoning the ELM numbers that have long been made available for the community to contact it. Community members said that they struggled with electricity that kept tripping at will, roads that were full of water, uncollected garbage and many other issues that concerned the municipality.

“We were told that we had put ourselves in this situation by voting for the other parties other than the ANC and that there was nothing that could be done for us. One of the ELM employees told us straight that we should stop calling the number we had called as that was her personal number, “a community member said.

Following the recent local government elections the ruling party, ANC, lost numerous wards and seats in the municipality and had to enter into a coalition with smaller parties which seems to have rubbed some of its members and employees the wrong way.
