Horrible accident on bridge, pothole claims life

When the truck hit the pothole, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it burst through the fence, tumbling off the bridge.

VEREENIGING. – A truck fully-loaded with apples was traveling towards Gauteng when it hit a pothole on the bridge between Sasolburg and Vereeniging on R59 near Spidervalley.

The accident occurred at around 20:00 on 4 January 2022.

It was raining and the pothole was filled with water. When the truck hit the pothole, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it burst through the fence, tumbling off the bridge.

The truck landed in a squashed pile of apples and steel cabin first on the ground where it burst out in flames.

Emergency services spent hours at the scene of the accident. The fire was finally extinguished but in the dark, they could not find the driver.

The cleaning up of the accident scene commenced early on 5 January.

They found the driver’s body severely burnt in the squashed cabin. The body had to be removed with special equipment.

While the remains of the truck were being removed, the pothole was apparently taken care of.
