Gauteng MEC calls on road users to adhere to traffic regulations

As we enter the festive period, a season characterised by high traffic volumes due to motorists traveling to various destinations, Gauteng Public Transport and Road Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo has called on travellers to observe road rules, adhere to COVID-19 protocols and to vaccinate.

SEDIBENG.-  He said this during his Smart Mobility programme where he led a Departmental road maintenance team attending to potholes along the Golden Highway (R558) last Wednesday.

This follows the MEC’s reassurance to motorists that the Department’s emergency road maintenance teams are on the ground and moving with speed attending to various damages inflicted onto the infrastructure.

The province endured heavy rainfalls resulting in damages to the road infrastructure.

“Sections of the Golden Highway are being rehabilitated due to the high traffic volumes on the road, heavy rainfalls and the growing need for improved safety measures. These measures are necessary to improve road safety on what is an extremely busy road,” emphasized the MEC.

He added the Department, through its #SmartMobility campaign, a dedicated extra capacity to catch up with backlogs that adversely affected road maintenance program, is embarking on a maintenance and repair drive giving priority to major routes affected mainly by poor road conditions and debris removal.

Mamabolo said that while he is satisfied with the current response to the #RequestASlot Campaign, he further called on people to make use of the multiple technological platforms to book for their driver’s license card renewal slots.

He proceeded to Hammanskraal where he joined an interprovincial law enforcement operation conducted by Gauteng, Limpopo and North West provinces.

He appealed to motorists to exercise patience and extra care when driving on the roads as maintenance work are in progress in various parts of the province.
