Emerald’s great Gingerbread Bake-off

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Emerald Resort and Casino is hosting a Gingerbread House Bake-off, challenging all home cooks to bake a beautiful and tasty gingerbread house.

Emerald Resort and Casino is proud to bring this “first in the Vaal” bake-off competition.
This is such a wonderful tradition that the whole family can get involved in.
“Making the gingerbread, rolling the dough, decorating with icing and sweets with my kids…those are the kind of memories that I keep in my album,” says Tanuja Gangabishun, Marketing Executive from Emerald.
“I cannot wait to see the beautiful creations our home cooks will come up with,” she concludes. The competition is open to home cooks of all ages and prizes include weekend accommodation for 2 and Christmas lunch for 4 in the Emerald Hotel worth over R5 000.
The first gingerbread houses are believed to be the result of the well-known Grimm’s fairy tale Hansel and Gretel. In the story, two abandoned children discovered a house made entirely of gingerbread and sugar decorations.
The largest gingerbread house was made in 2013, in aid of a hospital trauma centre.
The walk-in gingerbread house was 234 square meters and included 7200 eggs and 820kg butter.
Emerald’s chefs “Hansel” and “Gretel” will each bake a cake and post their tips and progress photographs on Facebook to help the home cooks along the way. Entry forms can be found on the Emerald website under the “What’s on” tab: https://www.emeraldcasino.co.za/events/emeralds-great-gingerbread-house-bake-off.
Entry is free and all gingerbread houses must be delivered to Emerald Hotel by 17 December between 08:00 and 10:00.
Judging will take place on 18 December, 10 am at Emerald.
The community can vote for the Public Choice winner on Facebook on 17 December. Emerald will also select a winner from Facebook who voted for their Public Choice winner.
Follow the competition on Facebook #emeraldgingerbreadhouse.
All gingerbread houses that were entered will be donated to children in shelters to celebrate the history of the gingerbread house and the season of giving.
