Mamabolo to fix roads damaged due to heavy rains

The Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure, Jacob Mamabolo has assured motorists that roads damaged due to recent heavy rains will be attended to.

“The Department’s Emergency Road Maintenance Teams are currently on the ground attending to various damages inflicted to the infrastructure,” said the MEC.

Mamabolo adds that the Department has embarked on a maintenance and repair programme giving priority to those major routes affected mainly by poor road conditions (potholes) and debris removal.

“This forms part of the Department’s SmartMobility campaign, a dedicated extra-capacity to catch up with backlogs of Covid-19 lockdowns that adversely affected the road maintenance program.”

Part of the campaign has seen major road refurbishment in Sebokeng, Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark. The MEC is further urging motorists to exercise extreme caution and responsibility when driving in rainy conditions.

“Drivers need to recognize that such conditions present unique challenges including, but not limited to, reduced visibility; reduced traction as well as increased time to bring a vehicle to a complete stop.”

Mamabolo further appealed to motorists to reduce speed, increase the following distances and turn on the headlights when driving in rainy conditions.

Gauteng residents and motorists are also urged to be on high alert, and to be aware of possible flash floods as well as avoid crossing flooded bridges and roads. Mamabolo encouraged users in the region to report poor road conditions on provincial roads in the region by calling the Vereeniging Regional Office in Sedibeng District on (016) 451 1047.
