Family questions ‘dumping’ of daughter’s body at local clinic

SHARPEVILLE. - The family of the late 23-year-old Itumeleng Lehoko is looking for answers as to why her body was allegedly left ‘dumped’ at a local clinic by an unknown escort.

Phola Seqaqa, the grandmother of the deceased, was transported to the local clinic by nurses, where she learned Lehoko had died.

“What surprised me about the incident is the fact that the person who brought my dead granddaughter to the clinic was nowhere to be found. How do you bring a dead person to a clinic and just vanish? It really doesn’t make sense.”

Seqaqa said that al-though her granddaughter showed no physical injuries, the fact that the person who had brought her in had fled the scene was very suspicious.

“We need to know who this person is because we need answers. We need to know what exactly happened to Itumeleng.”

Seqaqa says she last saw her granddaughter on Monday, 14 November, and was alerted of her death on Thursday.

“Her landlord said she was fine and left with an overnight bag on Wednesday evening. She never returned.”

Seqaqa reports that the person who left Lehoko’s body at the clinic also brought a bag containing all her belongings.

Porcia Gibson from Sedibeng Health Department says: “A patient arrived at Sharpeville Community Health Centre on 18 November, where the escort was assisted in getting the patient in a wheelchair from the car to get into the facility.

“The receiving Primary Health Care Nurse noticed that the patient was Death on Arrival (DOA) and called for assistance from other staff members. All necessary clinical information of the patient at that moment was received from the escort.

The police was called to further manage the matter. The escort had the patient’s identity book which assisted in obtaining full details of the patient on file. Family members’ details were received from the patient file and as the facility further contacted the family.”

Sharpeville SAPS Spokesperson Constable Busisiwe Sango confirmed that an inquest case docket was opened for investigation.
