Tebogo Thlokwe elected as ‘mayor’ of Sedibeng District Municipality after ANC walk-out

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has declared its mayoral candidate, Tebogo Thlokwe, the Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District, following a meeting on Friday (26 November 2021), which descended into chaos.

VEREENIGING. – The trouble started when the ANC failed to accept the VF Plus’s Hein van der Lith as the elected chief whip after he won by 25 votes to the ANC’s candidate, Emmarentia Moloi, who only received 24 votes. The ANC objected to the result saying voting was not “free and fair”. The ANC later walked out to have a caucus.

The DA says the meeting was never adjourned by the newly elected speaker, ML Modikeng.
“In terms of Section 41 of the Municipal Structures Act, read with Section 30, and in view of the recent judgement on the Tshwane matters, the remaining councillors, who formed a quorum, elected an acting speaker,” explained the DA’s regional chair in the Vaal, Dennis Ryder.
“The acting speaker called for nominations for Executive Mayor.
 

“Only 1 nomination was received, duly seconded and accepted. “Cllr Tebogo Thlokwe was declared elected as Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District,” says Ryder. There is a dispute between opposition parties and the ANC as whether the speaker closed the meeting or not…
