Gauteng ANCYL PTT demands young leaders

"It is our firm view that if young people do not act now, we will inherit an ANC that is nothing but a shell languishing in opposition benches,”

SEDIBENG.- The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) Provincial Task Team (PTT) in Gauteng is demanding an injection of young leaders into the leadership of the party.

This comes just days after the party’s poor performance in the recent local government elections that took place on November 1. The PTT said that it has painfully observed the local government elections results over the past few days and that it attributes the choice by most registered voters to ‘stay away’ from the polls to the caliber of leadership within the ANC in all regions in the province.

“Under the leadership of the ANC in Gauteng, especially in our metropolitans, the city of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, the ANC has seen an alarming decline in support receiving less than 50% in both the 2016 and 2021 local government elections. The current election has seen the worst voter turnout in the history of our democracy.”

The PTT said that, had it not been for the hard work and commitment displayed by the ANCYL in Gauteng, the outcomes could have been far worse.
“It is during this door-to-door campaigning that communities displayed and expressed their love for the African National Congress notwithstanding their disappointment with the dismal failure of the ANC leadership to fundamentally transform the economy in favour of the people, and to respect the wishes of the people in terms of Councillor Candidate selection. It is our firm view that if young people do not act now, we will inherit an ANC that is nothing but a shell languishing in opposition benches,” said the PTT.

*Meanwhile the ANC looks set to lose control of Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM). The party has collected 39.1% of the votes, a significant drop-in support considering that in 2016, it won control of the municipality with 55.63% of the vote.
The EFF’s luck has improved, with the party standing in third place with 15.59% support. In 2016 the party had 12.2%.
