“No June 16 celebrations for us”: Waterdal community

“As the Eatonside community we demand the relevant stakeholders to take action by closing this quarry that has ‘swallowed’ our children."

SEBOKENG.- The Waterdal community commemorated Youth Day differently when they decided to march to a deadly abundant quarry in Eatonside on June 16. This is not the first time, the community has marched to this abondened quarry to demanded its closure.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mamosweu Tsobi, who is one of the community’s activists said they demand Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to intervene. Tsobi said their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
“As the Eatonside community we demand the relevant stakeholders to take action by closing this quarry that has ‘swallowed’ our children. We will continue to march until something has been done with this quarry. We thought that at this time, they would have closed it but it is still there, posing danger to our children. When we are at work, we pray God to come back and find our children still alive because many children have died. We demand answers from our own municipality. How can people leave these quarries unattended,” she said.

Sedibeng Ster is investigating which construction company is responsible for this quarry.
