Six-day water shutdown infuriates residents

“No estimated time to normalise water supply can be communicated at this stage.”

Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) painted a bleak picture of the current water situation in a statement on Wednesday.

Trouble with the ELM began last Thursday when the municipality announced “possible water supply interruptions for Vanderbijlpark and surrounding areas,” that continued for 6 days.

ELM released a statement that outlines intervention plans amid the 6-day water shutdown hitting Vanderbijlpark and surrounding areas.

“Emergency work to repair the water pipeline supplying the Vanderbijlpark reservoirs continues today (Wednesday).

The Water Demand Management team jointly with Rand Water are currently on site working on efforts to restore supply. Emergency supply to recharge the water network and refill the reservoirs is currently underway.”

According to ELM consumers in lower lying areas had water later on Wednesday, while those in higher lying (Vanderbijlpark CBD, CE and CW Areas) areas will have no water.

The municipality has made a limited number of water tankers available.
