Man dies after being struck by ambulance

An attempt to save a life ended up in a loss of another life on Monday. This is after a Gauteng Emergency Services ambulance that was rushing a patient to Sebokeng hospital struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

SEBOKENG. – The incident happened on Moshoeshoe Road opposite Thabong Mall.

Bystanders at the scene reported that the ambulance was travelling on the oncoming side of the road and did not even stop after the man was hit.

Police spokesperson Constable Thulisile Msibi says, “Police have opened a culpable homicide case docket after a 35-year- old male was knocked down by an ambulance.

“It is alleged that a Gauteng Emergency Services ambulance was transporting a patient to Sebokeng Hospital for medical treatment. The pedestrian tried to cross the road but the ambulance was close.

“The man was hit and certified dead on the scene. Police are investigating further the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

Msibi confirmed that the ambulance was  travelling on the oncoming side of the road.

“The ambulance went to hospital to drop a patient, however another ambulance that was travelling behind the ambulance that caused the accident managed to stop at the scene.”

Gauteng Emergency Services said they have launched an investigation into the incident.
