Another completion deadline missed for Kopanong wing

VEREENIGING.- “The constant stoppages for the new wing at the Kopanong Hospital shows the failure of the Gauteng Infrastructure Development Department.”

This was a statement made by the Democratic Alliance (DA) back in January with regards to the hospital’s Covid assist upgrade.

Gauteng Premier, David Makhura promised last year that there would be 300 extra beds at the Kopanong Hospital to assist with the Covid-19 epidemic in the Vaal area, but since then, the project has been delayed repeatedly.

The project for an extra wing at the hospital started on 29 June last year using Alternative Building Technology (ABT).

It was expected that the project would be completed by 31 October last year.

At that stage, the project was presented to the Gauteng Legislature’s Health Committee to be at least 70% complete and was scheduled to be completed by 31 March this year.

But March has come and gone and the project is still not completed.

* Kopanong Hospital’s CEO, Mmaselloane Kgomojoo stated previously that this hospital wing of about 300 beds is being built behind the existing hospital to increase capacity. The project is still regarded as an essential steppingstone to improving the state of health in Vereeniging and surrounding areas. The new wing will double the capacity of the old hospital.
