SHARPEVILLE. – The police in Sharpeville in conjunction with the Youth Desk, Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Department of Community Safety including other stakeholders held an event dubbed ‘Youth against Crime.’

The event was held in Tshepiso Phase 1 on Tuesday as part Freedom Day Celebrations. Young people, parents, speakers and various stakeholders attended the event.

Police spokesperson Constable Busisiwe Sango says, “The purpose of the event is to look into social issues that affect the youth of today. “This is related to both crime and socio economic issues such as Gender-based Violence (GBV), poverty and unemployment, drugs, human trafficking and crime and its impact on society.”

Sharpeville SAPS Station Commander Colonel Augustine Mmboyi says, “Using drugs and being involved in criminal activities can ruin your life as a young person.

“This is the message we are giving to our young people today, that doing things that may lead to having a criminal record can destroy your future in that you may not be able to get employment in future.”

Mmboyi said the event would help find resolutions to issues affecting young people in the area and exploring the possibility of forming a relationship between the youth  and the police in  fighting crime.
