“MEC’s visits are nothing but a political tactic”- Mollo

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Emfuleni Central Constituency Political Head Dady Mollo has called the recent visits to Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) by the Gauteng CoGTA MEC Lebogang Maile, “nothing but a political tactic.”

VEREENIGING. – This follows the oversight visit by Maile to address matters of service delivery in ELM early this week. Maile was joined by Sedibeng District Mayor, Lerato Maloka, ELM Mayor, Gift Moerane and senior inter-departmental officials.

Mollo says, “One of the reasons that ELM has been placed under the Section 139 (1) and 139 (5) (a) of the Constitution, is due to its poor governance and glaring corruption.

“Incidences of corruption are still highly prevalent in the municipality. Irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure is equally common. This is despite MEC Maile’s deployment of a team of administrators.”

Mollo listed failure to collect refuse, toner repossessions, running out of diesel, potholes, dysfunctional streetlights, persistent water and electricity cut offs and failure to pay  suppliers  as some of the challenges the municipality is faced with.

Mollo alleges that the situation at ELM has worsened since a team of administrators was deployed to ELM. “

Regular reports are a clear indication that there is no progress neither consequence management for any wrongdoing at ELM. The residents of Emfuleni Municipality have suffered enough under the failing ANC-led administration and are in desperate need for change.”

Talking about the collapse of the ELM, MEC Maile said pointing fingers would not help. “We don’t have the luxury of pointing fingers now. We want to see service delivery taking place at a high scale, improving the lives of the residents of Emfuleni for the better.

“The visits afford us an opportunity to see first-hand whether we are making any progress or strides in terms of the intervention. We can see some progress, but we could have done better by now.”
