Two suspects were arrested along the R59 following a high-speed chase that started in Sasolburg.
This police responded swiftly after having been alerted of a chase of two cars, a VW Jetta and a Haval, which were used in local hijackings. The chase began in Sasolburg, leading up to the R59.
Police Spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda says: “The Haval was chased by VRU, Sasolburg Snipers and Anti-hijacking, as well as the Vanderbijlpark Task Team who pulled them over on the R59 next to Ascot-on-Vaal and arrested one suspect.
It was determined that the vehicle was involved in four house robberies and thefts of motor vehicles in Vanderbijlpark. The VW Jetta was pulled over on the R59 next to Arcon Park by the Sedibeng K9 Unit and Vereeniging Business Watch.
The car was fitted with false registration numbers and its original registration numbers were found in the motor vehicle.” Funda says that on further searching the vehicle, members came across a sixteen channel jamming device inside the boot.
“Further investigation revealed that the suspects have two pending cases of hijacking and theft of motor vehicles in Mondeor and Soweto respectively.” Acting Station Commander Colonel M W Petsana believes this should send a strong message to criminals, adding that they would never see a good day in Vereeniging.
