A ‘do it yourself’ culture rises in Emfuleni

Local residents are tired of complaining only to have their concerns fall on deaf ears about matters of service delivery that ail them in their communities.

VEREENIGING.- This recently became evident when residents of Homer in Steelpark rolled up their sleeves to fix and reseal a damaged road in their vicinity.

Community Spokesperson, Solly Nkhi said: “Community members collected rubble to start working on Jock Oosterlaak Street. They filled the potholes and levelled the street.”

Nkhi states that the community took it upon themselves to carry out the project as roads are very expensive for the municipality to replace.

“The problem stemmed from no consistent plan for the municipality on the maintenance of roads.

“The municipality must prioritise making funds available for surface treatment of roads. With the absence of continuous resealing programmes, the conditions of municipal roads are deteriorating at a dramatic rate.”

Nkhi said that another challenge that the municipality is facing is that of claims lodged by people whose motor vehicles have been damaged as a result of potholes.

“The current conditions jeopardise roads safety as well as effective traffic flow.”

Residents extended their gratitude to everyone who played a role in the completion of the project. “We would like to also covey our appreciation to our Ward Councillor Joyce Radebe for her support.”
