SEDIBENG.-A petition to compel the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) and the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) to clean the environment is currently doing its rounds on social media.
The organizers said that they want to live in a clean environment as per Section 24 of the RSA Bill of Rights and aim to garner as many signatures as possible for this to become a reality.
“Section 24 of the South African Bill of Rights states that ‘everyone has the right to clean environment’. Our area has slowly become inhabitable because of an illegal dump at the nearby open field, which was a productive mielie field until 2003. All kinds of waste such as oils, plastics, chemicals and dead animals are piled in heaps. For a solid 10 years the community of Barnasdal and Stephanopark, Vanderbijlpark, have requested the illegal dumping to be stopped and dumping to be removed from the Cillier Street illegal dump site,” the organizers said adding that the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Gauteng Provincial Government (ref. END 5707) and the South African Human Rights Commission (ref. GP/1920/0002) have been engaged in vain.
“None of these public servants are attending to the requests to clean and maintain the environment for human habitation. No bylaws, not even the ‘Polluter Pays’ principle is enforced by those in authority. Scavengers burn the waste and the smoke makes its way into homes, they also scatter non bio-degradables such as plastics into the yards of the immediate community. This proves to be a serious health and safety transgression from the people who are supposed to enforce byLaws through offices of sworn government officials, to the illegal dumpsters. Signing this petition can change all this for the better, government officials to deliver due services.”
