SHARPEVILLE.- It has been almost three months since the George Thabe Stadium Gym in Sharpeville has been left without a roof.

The roof of the gym inside the stadium was destroyed after heavy storms last December.
The people who use the gym for training purposes have complained to Sedibeng Ster that they get flooded out every time it rains. This was confirmed by the stadium caretaker, Oupa Motsoatsoe, who mentioned that water immerses the gym completely. Motsoatsoe said the incident happened last year before 16 December. He added that he has reported this matter to his seniors.
“We have been training under these conditions since last year December. We don’t know when the municipality intends to fix this roof. The equipment has been exposed to the sun and rain. We had to move other equipment where there is no sun. But when it is raining there is nothing we can do,” said the gym users. Meanwhile Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) senior officials said they are aware about the situation. They told Sedibeng Ster that the municipality has submitted a report to their insurance company.
“We are waiting for feedback from the insurance people because we submitted everything needed to them. People must understand that there is a process that needs to be followed by the insurance company. They don’t only rely on our report, but they also conduct investigations from their side based on the report we gave them. It is the same as when you’re involved in a car accident, the insurance companies don’t just pay. They investigate the nature of the accident and they take it from there. Even though this situation might be different, but same process must be followed. I can’t say how long it will take for the gym to be fixed. I can’t promise anything,” said an official.
