VANDERBIJLPARK.- Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) is appealing to all residents to stop flushing foreign materials in toilets, dumping waste in manholes and blocking the sewer pipes.

ELM said in recent weeks, it has attended several complaints of sewer blockages in Palm Springs, Bophelong Extensions 14, 16 and 17, all caused by foreign objects lodged in the sewer system.

According to the municipality rocks, animal carcasses, vehicle tyres, shoes, clothing and general household waste found lodged in the sewer system.

“The municipality is therefore calling on all residents to join the war against dumping foreign objects into the sanitation system by utilizing the sewer system for what it was exclusively designed for,” the municipality said.

Residents are encouraged to report blocked sewer lines, missing manhole covers and any unlawful activities such as disposing of foreign objects into manholes.

While the municipality will continue to service blockages, residents are hereby warned that the continued practice of disposing foreign objects into the sewer system creates not only blockages, but unnecessary and expensive backlogs as well.
