SDM mourns the death of its Mayor

SEDIBENG. – The news of the death of Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Executive Mayor, Busisiwe “Busi” Modisakeng has dealt the municipality a great blow. SDM Executive Mayor, Busisiwe Joyce Modisakeng (55) died yesterday, Thursday, January 7 in hospital following her admission for a COVID-19 related illness. Modisakeng joined Sedibeng District Municipality as the Speaker of Council in 2011 until 2015. Thereafter, the African National Congress (ANC) appointed her as the Executive Mayor SDM until her untimely passing. She also served as the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Gauteng Chairperson. Sedibeng District Acting Municipal Manager (MM), Motswaledi Makhutle said, “On behalf of Sedibeng District Municipality, we express our heartfelt condolences to the Modisakeng family, her friends and the people of Gauteng.” In a statement the SDM said that Modisakeng served selflessly and tirelessly as a deployee of the African National Congress (ANC) for four consecutive terms since 1995 at the former Heidelberg Town Council, now Lesedi Local Municipality until 2011 as its Executive Mayor. She also served as a member of the ANC PEC in Gauteng “Sedibeng District Municipality extends its deepest and heartfelt condolences to Modisakeng’s family, friends, members of the ANC Alliance, SALGA Gauteng, Sedibeng community and various stakeholders. We profusely thank her family for giving her the support and space to selflessly serve the community of Sedibeng and South Africa at large. Cllr Modisakeng will remembered and as a selfless and tireless deployee of the African National Congress and amongst the longest serving female Executive Mayor to date,” the statement said. Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) Secretary General, Apa Pooe said that Modisakeng will be remembered for her steadfast leadership and non-partisanship in performance of statutory functions and commitment in the struggle of all women and humanity.
