Successful arrests after car chase and shootout

VEREENIGING. - Four men suspected of various crimes were arrested last week Thursday after a car chase and shootout with police.

Two of the suspects sustained injuries during the shootout and were taken to hospital afterwards under police guard. The other two were taken into custody. Provincial Police Spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said police officers from the Sedibeng District Anti-hijacking Unit received information about the vehicle that was involved in a house robbery, driving in Meyerton towards Vereeniging. Police together with other law enforcement agencies responded swiftly to the information. A white Haval was spotted on the M61 Meyerton. As the police pulled over the vehicle, one occupant pointed a firearm at the police. A high-speed chase and shootout ensued until the police cornered the suspects in Vereeniging.  The preliminary investigation revealed that the car was reported stolen in Carletonville in June this year. The suspects are facing charges of attempted murder, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of housebreaking implements. Police expect that more charges will be added as the investigation unfolds. Masondo said the suspects will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court in due course.
