Facebook accused of abusing market dominance

Facebook is facing a major lawsuit. What are the reasons behind this legal matter?

Facebook is a major industry player which has continued to dominate the digital media landscape.

United States Federal authorities have however announced that Facebook broke the law. US Federal Trade Commission and nearly every US state sued Facebook on Wednesday.

Addressing the media, New York Attorney General Letitia James said Facebook had violated antitrust laws by systemically crashing its rivals by using its dominance and monopoly power to stifle out any form of competition.

The authorities have referred to Facebooks acquisition of Instagram at $1 Billion and WhatsApp at $19 billion and suggested that the acquisitions should be relooked at.

This is one of the biggest antitrust lawsuits to be experienced in decades.
