Self-defence skills for women and young girls

This initiative is spearheaded by the NWU Vaal Students.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- With the number of kidnapping and gender-based violence (GBV) cases of on the rise, the North West University (NWU) students haves organized a self-defence initiative. This initiative is spearheaded by the NWU Vaal Students’ Activities Officers, Tshepang Mosokwene and Katlego Baisang.


Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Baisang said this initiative, which has taken place over the past two weeks, is more than just a program, and that it is also a measure taken by young people to bring about a solution to matters at hand especially against kidnappers and traffickers that are targeting young girls.
“These people mainly target our women and young girls causing them to live in constant fear. The drastic increase in reports, fear and frustration is strongly echoed by surrounding schools, colleges and universities. This predicament which we are facing seems insurmountable and a heavy burden to bare.
“This is why we saw a need to call for an intervention in order to bring about change that will end these cases of gender based violence and kidnappings,” said Baisang. This initiative includes the following: direct empowerment of the targeted civilians, preventative measures and self-defence initiatives.
