WATCH: Police protect Emfuleni Mayor

VANDERBIJLPARK. – Armed members of the South African Police Service threatened to “disperse” a crowd of angry people who stormed the residence of the mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Reverend Gift Moerane, at the Riverspray Complex in Vanderbijlpark on Monday night.

This is the second night in a row that residents of Falcon Ridge and Arcon Park have assembled in front of the complex housing the mayor.
On Sunday night residents disconnected the power to the complex to give the mayor a taste of what it feels like to not have electricity.

This follows after residents were plunged into darkness again over the weekend. Power failures regularly occur in these suburbs, sometimes lasting days, and residents are fed up.
On Sunday night protesters were told that the mayor would address them on Monday afternoon.
That never happened as the mayor said that he could not fulfill the promise as he was not feeling well.
This prompted angry residents to return to the mayor’s home.
Several protesters arrived at around 18:45.
Police gave the protesters until 19:00 to disperse, after which they threatened to shoot residents with rubber bullets. By 19:00 everyone had left.
