Pensioners homeless after shack burns down

The accident left the family with nothing except the clothes they were wearing on the day.

SHARPEVILLE. – A fierce fire left pensioners homeless after their shack burned down in Tshepiso Ext 1, Sharpeville over the weekend.

The accident left the family with nothing except the clothes they were wearing on the day.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Whitey Gobe (65) said when the accident happened at around 19:00 in the evening there was no one home. He said he was at Sebokeng Hospital to fetch her wife Kelibone Molise (64) who was discharged. Gobe said his wife was admitted at hospital on Friday because she has been sick.

“When we came back I found people trying to help put out the fire but everything was burning including the furniture and my car outside. It is sad because we use the car when going to SASA to collect our grands. Both of us are pensioners and I don’t how we are going to replace everything we lost, including the shack. We stay with our grandchild, but he is not working as well,” he said.

Gobe said the fire was caused by a candle that was left lit because Eskom is still to install electricity in the area.

As the situation stands, the pensioners stay with their children hoping that Good Samaritans will come to their rescue to build them another shack.

Meanwhile Sedibeng Ster has already contacted the Sedibeng Disaster Department to see how best they can help.
