SHARPEVILLE. – Sedibeng Ster Sport recently tracked down one of the former boxing greats this region has ever seen, Sharpeville resident, Carlton “Swing Carlie” Monnakgotla.
Despite being 80 years old, Monnakgotla still has sharp memories about his boxing career. He might have retired a long time ago as a boxer but he still relishes some of the great memories when he was South African Middleweight boxing champion between 1968 and 1970.
This was after he beat his most feared opponent, John Ngidi.

But I told them that I’m going to beat him, which I did. I came into this fight well prepared and I knew how he fought because I had been following his fights,” he recalled.
