EVATON-. An Evaton businessman has taken it upon himself to cook lunch for local kids every Sunday. Johannes ‘Kanki’ Mofokeng, a Tuck-shop owner, is the man behind this initiative and when Sedibeng Ster visited his place on Sunday, after some community members made this newspaper aware about this initiative, there were more than 70 children awaiting their turn to collect the food. This project is one of its kind to take place in the community.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the Project’s Coordinator, Nthabiseng Mofokeng, said that this was an initiative from Mofokeng following the lockdown, with the aim of feeding the poor children.
Nthabiseng said that Mofokeng, who is also Pastor at a local church in Small Farm, Evaton, used church funds to cook lunch for the kids in the community.
“This project was started in April by Pastor Mofokeng, because most parents lost their jobs due to COVID-19. We cook for these children every Sunday, so that they can have lunch like other children in the community. But sometimes the lunch is not enough for all the children because the number keeps on increasing every Sunday. We appeal to Good Samaritans in the community, especially local businesspeople, to contribute something to sustain this project,” she told Sedibeng Ster.
Nthabiseng said that they intend to sustain the project beyond lockdown if they get the support needed.
