Another family parishes in shack fire

When Sedibeng Ster arrived at the scene, the neighbours were still traumatized.

EVATON.- In short space of a week, another tragedy has struck with a mother and two children burning to death in a shack in Evaton.
Manuku Stuurman (39) and her two children, Naledi (13) and Keketso (3), burned inside their shack on Buffalo Road, Evaton, last Thursday night. This is just a week after Sedibeng Ster ran a similar story about the Radebe family losing two members in the same area of Evaton.
When Sedibeng Ster arrived at the scene, the neighbours were still traumatized.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Makgauta Makume, whose shack is next to the Stuurman’s, said she was awakened by a strange sound and screaming. She said at first, she thought ‘tsotsi’s’ were breaking into her next door neighbours’ shack but when she came out, the shack was engulfed with flames.
“I risked my life to go out at that time of the night because I wanted to see what was happening, only to find that Manuku’s shack was burning. I screamed for help and people came to help but the flames were too strong. We tried everything to save the family, with no success. We were very close with her and when I arrived here last month, she was the first to welcome me. She was such a humble person,” said Makume with tears rolling from her eyes.
The family Spokesperson, Matemo Mosokwene, said the family is sadden by this tragedy.
Sibusiso Peshwa, whose family the stand belongs to, said they intend to organize counselling for everyone involved.
He told Sedibeng Ster that it was an ugly scene, with everyone being hopeless as they saw the Stuurman family die in the shack. However, Peshwa said it is not clear if the fire was caused by an electrical fault.
