Shack fire leaves two children dead

Their death is believed to have been caused by electricity cut-offs.

EVATON.- While the country celebrated the 10th anniversary of hosting the FIFA World Cup, the Radebe family mourned the death of their two children in Evaton last week.
The incident happened last Thursday night, between 19:00 and 20:00.
Letlotlo Radebe (5) and Linamdla Radebe (3) burnt to death inside their shack. Their death is believed to have been caused by electricity cut-offs.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, the family said this incident happened in the absence of the children’s mother, Mami Radebe, who had gone to the neighbourhood tuck-shop to buy a candle, as there was no electricity in the area at the time. The mother left her four children in the house, two of them survived the fire. Xolisa (16) and Lerato (13) managed to escape but their attempts to save their siblings was unsuccessful as the fire was overpowering. The mother said that when she arrived from the tuck-shop, she caught sight of her house engulfed by flames, with neighbours doing their best to help kill the fire.
“I went to buy a candle however the electricity came back on while I was out. I don’t know what happened, even my children who escaped can’t explain,” said the heartbroken mother.
When Sedibeng Ster visited the scene, family, relatives and neighbours were in the process of cleaning the area of what used to be the Radebe home.
