BOPHELONG. – Nowadays, it is very rare to see some of the traditional beliefs still being practiced in our communities.

Sedibeng Ster recently visited one of the families that still practice their traditions, particularly when it is family gatherings. The Mahlasela family from Bophelong still even use African traditional utensils such as Mohope, used for drinking traditional beer and water.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mateboho Mahlasela said they still keep to their tradition and have family gatherings, mekete.

“Yes we still have utensils such as Mohope that we use when drink traditional beer or water when there are family gatherings. I know not many people still have these, even the elderly people in the community. Even my grandchildren don’t know this,” she said.

When Sedibeng Ster asked one of her grandchildren, Tshepang Mahlasela if she knows what a Mohope is, she said she doesn’t know.

“I don’t know what this is but my grandmother said use it to drink traditional beer or water. But I didn’t know what it was called’, she told Sedibeng Ster.
