Toddler’s hand injured while at Sebokeng Hospital

Gauteng Department of Health Spokesperson Motalatale Modiba says that the matter involving a child at Sebokeng hospital is deeply regrettable.

This is after a 14-month old toddler’s right hand was injured while she was still admitted at the hospital.

Mother Khabonina Mollo says that her child only had short breath, but upon her arrival on the day the child was discharged, she found that the toddler’s hand had been severely injured.

Modiba says, “An investigation has been instituted to get to the bottom of the incident. The staff members that are involved have been placed on precautionary transfer so as not to interfere with the investigation.”

Modiba added that where people acted negligently, there would be consequences. “In terms of patient care the process of debridement has been done on the affected right hand. The wound was exposed yesterday and was dressed with saline and tulle-gras.”

“We wish to once more extend our unreserved apology to the parents of the baby and assure them that action will be taken to hold those that are responsible to account.”

Mollo and her husband Bafana Mollo both say they were deeply hurt by what happened to their daughter while she was still under the care of Sebokeng Hospital.

“We just hope that our daughter heals completely and is able to use her hand. We are saddened by what happened because when they (the hospital) took her, she had no physical injuries.”

Both parents are still looking for answers as to what happened to their daughter’s hand.
