PICS: Firearms, ammunition and suspected diamonds found in Vanderbijl home

Police said one suspect has since been arrested. 

An intelligence-driven operation, led by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), recovered four unlicensed firearms, ammunition and what appeared to be diamonds, in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng on Monday.

On arrival, police officers also recovered about 50 stones that they say could be diamonds. “The stones are still to be tested,” said Captain Kay Makhubele in a statement.

“The firearms will be sent to Forensic Science Laboratory for ballistic testing, to determine if the firearms might have been used to commit other crimes,” added Makhubele.

Some of the items seized were; two 303 rifles, two. 22 pistols, 60 x live shotgun rounds, 12 x 303 live rounds, 4 x R5 live rounds, 24 x 9mm live rounds, 2 x 38 special live rounds, 9 x R5 magazines, 21 x different size pistol magazines, 2 x 303 magazines, 1 x 40mm cs riot smk, 1 x holster, 1 x baton, 1x black police torch, 3 x SAPS Constable ranks, 2 x SAPS name tags, 2x SAPS belts, 1x police bulletproof, 2 x SAPS reflector jackets, 1 x SAPS cap, 1 x container with rifle projectiles and 1 x container with empty cartridges.

The provincial management has commended the good work done by the team and urged the community to continue to work with the police to report the crime.

The arrested suspect will be appearing in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court soon.
