Trucking companies operating at less than 50% of capacity during lockdown

Trucking fleets are operating at only 46% of their capacity, with road freight operators anticipating a 64% drop in income during lock down months.

This is according to the latest survey conducted by The Road Freight Association (RFA) amongst the industry.

The survey also revealed that 73% of staff are still receiving salaries, with 42% of those now working from home.

“These figures are simply not sustainable for a going concern,” commented RFA Chief Executive Gavin Kelly. “We anticipate that many operators will not survive the coming year and that even more jobs are going to be lost.”

Kelly re-iterated the Association’s call to allow the transport and logistics industry and all its sub-sectors to operate fully, with immediate effect. “South Africa’s fragile economy needs to open up quickly, if we are to avoid further economic devastation.” he said.
