Monitor food relief distributions: SACP VAAL

“While we appreciate the information that is alleging (that) some of the Councillors are involved in the distribution of the food parcels, we plead with the people of the Vaal to keep evidence of such activities."

SEDIBENG.- The South African Communist Party (SACP) Vaal has called on acting Gauteng MEC of Social Development, Panyaza Lesufi, to establish a monitoring mechanism for the process of food relief distributions in the province.

The party recently held a virtual District Executive Committee (DEC), through Zoom, ensuring that they comply with the lockdown regulations. Thembinkosi Pulu, SACP Sedibeng District Secretary said that the meeting was held to assess the progress made by government in level 5, as the country moved to level 4.

“The (SACP) DEC wish to congratulate the people of Sedibeng for ensuring that the virus does not spread as it is happening in other parts of the province.”

Pulu said that they have also noted that the aspects of capacity to meet the demand (of food relief) remains a challenge.

“We further noted that while there is little that is being distributed, that process is not monitored and therefore once again call on the acting MEC of Social Development, Cde Panyaza Lesufi, to establish a monitoring mechanism for the process of distribution.”

Pulu said that they support the decision made by the Gauteng Provincial Government in ensuring not to involve politicians, in particular Councillors, in the distribution of the food parcels.

“While we appreciate the information that is alleging (that) some of the Councillors are involved in the distribution of the food parcels, we plead with the people of the Vaal to keep evidence of such activities either by taking a video or a photo and immediately approach the law enforcement officers.”

Pulu also called on all community members to report any criminal activities committed in the name of COVID-19, including the sales of permits.

“Our people must desist from engaging in such, we encourage those who might be the victims of these acts to approach the law enforcement institutions to lay criminal charges against whoever is leveling false accusations in pursuit of inciting violence against the alleged victims.”
