DSD gives food parcels to Joko Tea community

Recipients who qualified for food parcels had to be unemployed, be recyclers and social grant recipients.

BOPHELONG. – The Department of Social Development (DSD) visited the community of Joko Tea Squatter Camp to make food donations today, May 7.

More than 300 households, identified and registered in advance by BoNtate ba Kopane Forum, received the social relief packages in a form of food parcels. Recipients who qualified for food parcels had to be unemployed, be recyclers and social grant recipients.

The Forum’s Spokesperson and Founder, Herry Balakazi, said the Forum had registered 500 people. The same number of recipients will be focused on in Bophelong Extension 17 and 18 soon. Former Joko Tea residents who have already moved to a new section called Marikina will also be visited later to be registered for receipt of the parcels.

A DSD official declined to speak to the press but said the food parcels had been delivered by various vehicles and trucks.

Police and Social Relief Teams were present to make sure that recipients maintained social distancing and also made sure that they follow up Covid 19 regulations.
