Man runs marathon in memory of Covid-19 victims

“Instead of not doing anything this year, I thought about all the people who lost their lives to the virus and I immediately came to a decision to run in their memory."

VANDERBIJLPARK. – South Africans have thought up many innovative ways of keeping up to their commitments during the Covid-19 Pandemic. As a result of the Lockdown, sporting events such as the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon have been cancelled.

This year’s marathon was set to take place on 11 April, but was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But lockdown did not stop Lebohang ‘Happyfeet’ Nyaka (36) from Vanderbijlpark running a marathon.

This would have been Nyaka’s fourth year participating in the Two Oceans 56km Ultra Marathon which was altered to 58km. “I trained for the marathon, not knowing what the country would be facing at this time in our lives.”

Lebohang who had been training and preparing for the marathon did not let his hard work go to waste.

“Instead of not doing anything this year, I thought about all the people who lost their lives to the virus and I immediately came to a decision to run in their memory.”

“I ran the 58kms in the complex yard consisting of 250 meters. It was very hard but because I was doing it for a good cause, nothing deterred me finish the challenge. “I would like to say to South Africans, let’s not take this virus lightly. Let us all adhere to the rules and regulations of the Lockdown and stay at home, stay safe and maintain social distancing at all times.

Together we can defeat this virus and once again go back to normal.”
