Dumping site poses COVID-19 danger to children

VANDERBIJLPARK.- For the past two weeks the Emfuleni Local Municipality waste management workers were seen collecting waste. However, the problem is that the community still uses open places for dumping.

They told Sedibeng Ster they are now used to dumping in open space seeing that the EML take time to collect waste at their homes. Residents say they used take the plastics or waste in the street thinking that the municipality would collect them.

The CW4 community use the open space between Vanderbijlpark and Boipatong. This situation has created a problem among the community especially those who stay not far from dumping space, next to main road in CW4 area. They told Sedibeng Ster that when there is a wind the plastics fly all over their yards. Sedibeng Ster visited this dumping site and there were plastics all over the place. One of the community member who stays near the dumping site said they have tried to address this situation but with no success.

“Look we don’t want to be victimised by our own community but this affects us. We have children and with this COVID-19 pandemic thing, we are worried because they will go and play there. We don’t know what is inside some of these plastics. We thank Sedibeng Ster for coming and we hope municipality will do something about this situation.”
