Ethiopian arrested for unlicensed firearm and selling non-essential goods

EVATON. –  The country is strictly under lockdown until the end of the month, but some people continue to disobey the law.

The High Density, B Relief Unit members of the Evaton police arrested a 35-year-old Ethiopian national at his tuck-shop in Dona Road, Eastonville, Evaton for possession of an unlicensed firearm, an expired asylum document and violating the Disaster Management regulations in Evaton yesterday afternoon.

Evaton Police spokesperson, Captain Aubrey Moopeloa said that the police received information about a suspect that was selling non-essential goods (cigarettes) in the area and that upon their search of his place of business the suspect was found to be in possession of an unlicensed 7, 65 mm pistol, illegal live ammunition and expired asylum seeker documents.

Police also found the suspect illegally selling cigarettes.

“He was also found to be in violation of disaster management regulation/act no: 57 of 2002 by selling goods that are not essential ( the cigarettes).  In terms of disaster management regulation, the suspect is not supposed to sell cigarettes,” said Moopeloa adding that on further investigation it was found that the firearm was stolen somewhere in Heilbron, Free State.

Packets of various kind of cigarettes were also found at the tuck-shop.

The suspect will appear soon before Sebokeng magistrate court.
