Young mothers defy lockdown order

“There is nothing that we can do we also need the money to buy food for our children. It is their money, it is there and we are here to collect it.”

VEREENIGING. – With children on their backs young mothers, unlawfully, also lined up at most stores in Sedibeng to collect their children’s grants from Monday.

This was also in defiance of a lockdown order of leaving children at home when going to congested places as they are vulnerable to infection. Sedibeng Ster observed that the 1 meter rule, as stipulated by government was also not adhered to as many queued to receive the grants on Monday.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) brought forward the payment of social grants for the elderly and persons with disabilities in an effort to lower the risk of Covid-19 infection by reducing congestion at retailers and banks. The grant payment was brought by two days, from 1 April to 30 March. All other grants recipients, like child support grants were supposed to be collecting them from 1 April.

“There is nothing that we can do we also need the money to buy food for our children. It is their money, it is there and we are here to collect it,” a group of young mothers said.
