SA lockdown: Chaos at Vanderbijlpark cemetery

The Covid-19 crisis nearly erupted into a riot when police and law enforcement officers were deployed to ensure that only 50 mourners attended a funeral on 28 March at the Vanderbijlpark cemetery.

The Sangoma’s had actually  brought several pythons to the occasion.
Police were especially hard pressed when a mourner turned up with a firearm taken from his vehicle.
At one point its seemed he would open fire on a law enforcement official who were part of the police effort to keep a surfeit of mourners out of the  cemetery.
In fact, mourners were warned by  police minister Bhekie Cele not to turn up in numbers exceeding 50.
This was to avoid the further spread of the pandemic.
The traffic officer who had been threatened by the gunman has opened a case.
The snakes were there because the deceased was himself a Sangoma. However, the Sangoma’s themselves exceeded the  number prescribed by  Minister Bheki Cele. Most were let to wait outside the cemetery for an hour and half.
Police have confirmed  that a case has been opened.
