Following the seizure of assets of ELM by the Sheriff of the Court due to R2,3 billion debt owed to Eskom, MEC Lebogang Maile together with Eskom Group Chief Executive Officer, André de Ruyter and Emfuleni Local Municipality Acting Executive Mayor Councillor Pius Maseko, Municipal Manager Lucky Leseane, and other senior government officials, met at the Gauteng Legislature in the Johannesburg Central Business District.
The meeting resolved on following:
- Emfuleni Local Municipality will pay Eskom R50 million by end of business on Tuesday (17 March 2020); – Maile confirmed that indeed ELM paid the R50 million to Eskom by end of business on Tuesday. “We are now working on finalizing a sustainable, affordable and realistic payment plan,” says Maile.
- Eskom will suspend the seizure of assets upon receipt of payment;
- Joint teams will work out a feasible, sustainable and affordable payment plan for consideration by both parties;
- Emfuleni Local Municipality will henceforth pay Eskom its monthly accounts in full.
