Police ready for Gauteng shutdown

As thousands of protesters take to the streets demanding free electricity, housing and land, parts of Gauteng are expected to come to a standstill on Tuesday.

“Officers will be deployed and we will work with other law enforcement agencies,” Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Wayne Minnaar told News24.

“We will deal with it as it unfolds.”

Residents from Soweto, Alexandra, Tembisa, Eldorado Park and the Vaal are expected to participate in the shutdown.

The Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee planned to shut down the suburb this week after holding a rally on Sunday to challenge a R18bn electricity bill, EWN reported

The group said that it was planning to shut down the township during the State of the Province Address and the national Budget Speech this week.
