“Pay your municipal bill before paying your tithe at church. The lack of payment is a big part of the problem facing our local communities,” Baloyi wrote on Twitter.
The controversial tweet seems to have not only raised the ire of religious groups but also that of local councillors.
FF Plus councillor in Vanderbijlpark, Gerda Senekal, took Baloyi to task for his tweet.
On Facebook she wrote: “Notice to the DA Mayor of Midvaal.. BONGANI BALOYI. MY Christian morals, values and duties will never be second to politics. It will always be FIRST!!!!!”
Following responses Baloyi posted: “If the message below doesn’t apply to you, keep it moving. But the days of normalizing communities which do not pay for services they enjoy but churches and shebeens are full week in and no one misses paying tithe or even DSTV, must come to an end. PAY YOUR BILL”.
